About
Overview
Cestoplana rubrocincta is a marine flatworm belonging to the order Polycladida. This species is known for its slender, ribbon-like body and is typically found in temperate waters across various regions of the world.
Distribution & habitat
This species is widely distributed, with records spanning the temperate Atlantic, the Mediterranean, and coastal areas of India. It is primarily an intertidal dweller, frequently observed in rocky environments. These flatworms are commonly found hiding in sheltered spots, such as underneath rocks, within rock crevices and caves, or associated with colonies of bryozoans and ascidians.
Appearance
Cestoplana rubrocincta is characterized by a long, thin body shape. While often described as a ribbon-like worm, it is a true flatworm. When disturbed, individuals may exhibit a defensive behavior of curling their bodies into a ball.
Biology & behavior
These worms are generally solitary and can be elusive, often moving quickly into holes or crevices when approached. They are hermaphroditic, specifically described as protandrous, meaning they function as both sexes, typically maturing as males before developing female reproductive organs. While they are considered a rare sighting, their presence in diverse global locations suggests they may be more widespread than initial observations indicated.
