About

Overview

Mycale subclavata is a marine sponge species belonging to the family Mycalidae. It is typically found in sheltered environments where it thrives in silty conditions with slight to moderate water currents.

Appearance

This sponge exhibits an irregular growth form, often beginning as a moderately thick crust before developing into irregular, cushion-like structures. A key identifying feature is its distinctive watery orange coloration. The texture of the sponge is soft, yet it remains resilient and is not easily torn. In more mature individuals, the sponge may form lobes, with osculae (exhalant openings) positioned at the top of these structures.
