Palisada Perforata

About
Overview
Palisada perforata is a marine red alga characterized by its rigid, cartilaginous, and often turf-like growth form. It is widely distributed across temperate and tropical seas, where it typically attaches to rocky substrates via a discoid holdfast.
Appearance
This seaweed typically grows in tufts or compacted mats, reaching heights of approximately 5 to 10 cm. Its thalli are cylindrical and range in color from greenish to deep purplish-red or maroon. The branches are often covered in small, bump-like structures arranged in rows, each featuring a characteristic sunken pit at the tip. These features give the alga a distinct, textured appearance.
Distribution & habitat
Palisada perforata is found in various marine environments, including the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea. It is frequently observed in the intertidal and infralittoral zones, where it is often exposed to high-energy wave action on rocky shores. The species is known to form dense, turf-like mats in these challenging, high-energy habitats.
