About
Overview
The elegant anemone (Cylista elegans) is a highly variable sea anemone known for its diverse color patterns and ability to thrive in various coastal environments. It is commonly found in the northeastern Atlantic, ranging from Scandinavia and the British Isles down to the Mediterranean, where it often lives in large aggregations.
Appearance
This species features a fleshy, cylindrical column that can reach up to 3 cm in diameter at the base. The column is adorned with numerous small, pale suckers, particularly on its upper portion, and is capable of emitting white defensive threads called acontia when the animal is disturbed. It typically possesses around 200 tentacles of moderate length. Because of its extreme color variability—ranging from red, brown, and orange to whitish or greenish—it was historically categorized into several distinct color varieties.
Distribution & habitat
Cylista elegans is widely distributed across the coasts of western Europe, including the North Sea, the English Channel, and the Mediterranean. It is frequently found in intertidal zones, such as rock pools, caves, and beneath overhangs, as well as in sublittoral areas. It often anchors its base within small holes or crevices in the substrate, allowing it to retract quickly when threatened.
Biology & behavior
This anemone is a carnivore that primarily feeds on zooplankton, supplemented by small prey captured by its tentacles. It is known for its ability to reproduce through basal laceration, a process where fragments of its base develop into new individuals. This behavior often results in the irregular arrangement of tentacles and the formation of dense, localized colonies in areas with strong water currents.
