About

Overview

The herring scad (Alepes vari) is a common tropical marine fish belonging to the jack family, Carangidae. It is widely distributed throughout the Indo-West Pacific, where it typically inhabits shallow coastal waters and forms dense, pelagic schools near the surface.

Distribution & habitat

This species is found across the tropical Indo-West Pacific, ranging from the Red Sea and Persian Gulf to Japan, and south to northern Australia and New Caledonia. It favors clear coastal and offshore reefs, where it is frequently observed swimming well above the substrate in surface waters.

Appearance

The herring scad has an oblong, compressed, and slender body with a greyish-blue to bluish-green dorsal coloration that fades to a silvery-white on the underside. It is distinguished from similar species by its numerous small scutes, a faint or sometimes absent dusky blotch on the upper operculum, and a dusky yellow caudal fin. Mature males may exhibit darker pigmentation on the spinous dorsal, pelvic, and anal fins compared to females.

Biology & behavior

As a schooling species, the herring scad is often found in large groups in clear, shallow reef environments. It is a harmless, active swimmer that remains high in the water column.

Feeding

This species is a predator that feeds primarily on small invertebrates, including shrimps, copepods, and crabs, as well as small fishes.
