Spotted Boxfish
Ostracion Meleagris

Indian Ocean, Tropical Pacific
About
Overview
The Spotted Boxfish is a distinctive marine species recognized by its rigid, box-like body encased in a bony carapace. Widely distributed across the Indo-Pacific and Eastern Pacific, this species is commonly found in reef environments where it navigates with slow, deliberate movements using its fins.
Appearance
This species exhibits striking sexual dimorphism, leading to historical confusion regarding its classification. Females and juveniles are typically dark brown to black, covered in small white spots that provide camouflage against the reef. In contrast, adult males develop a vibrant blue coloration on their sides, accented by bright yellow or orange bands and spots. Their bodies are angular and oblong, with only the eyes, mouth, and fins protruding from their protective, fused-plate armor.
Biology & Behavior
Spotted Boxfish are generally solitary, though they may live in small groups consisting of one male and several females. Males are notably territorial and will defend their range from other males. When threatened, these fish possess a unique chemical defense mechanism: they can excrete a toxic, slimy mucus through their skin that can irritate or even deter potential predators. They are not strong swimmers, relying on their armor and chemical defenses for survival.
Feeding
As omnivorous bottom-feeders, their diet is varied and includes didemnid tunicates, sponges, mollusks, copepods, and polychaete worms, as well as various types of algae found on the reef.
Reproduction
During spawning, the male and female swim together several feet above the reef. The female releases her eggs into the water column, where they are fertilized by the male's sperm. Some studies suggest that individuals may perform spawning migrations to offshore reefs to complete their reproductive cycle.
