Lesser Weever
Echiichthys Vipera
Sandy & muddy bottom, Seafloor
Mediterranean Sea, Temperate Atlantic
About
Overview
The Lesser Weever is a small, venomous marine fish known for its habit of burying itself in sandy seabeds with only its eyes and dorsal fin exposed. While generally peaceful, it is considered the most dangerous of the European weever species due to its tendency to inhabit shallow waters near popular beaches, where it can inflict painful stings if stepped on.
Distribution & habitat
This species is found in the eastern Atlantic, ranging from the North Sea and the British Isles down to Morocco and Madeira, as well as throughout the Mediterranean. It prefers littoral and benthic environments, typically residing on clean sandy, muddy, or gravelly bottoms from the low water mark down to depths of approximately 150 meters in winter.
Appearance
The Lesser Weever has an elongated, stout body that typically reaches about 10–14 cm in length. Its coloration is generally greyish-brown on the back with a silvery-white underside, often featuring small black spots. Key identifying features include a large, upward-sloping mouth, eyes positioned high on the head, and a distinctive, entirely black first dorsal fin equipped with venomous spines.
Biology & behavior
Primarily a nocturnal hunter, the Lesser Weever remains partially buried in the substrate during the day to ambush prey and avoid predators. It is a solitary and slightly territorial animal. The venom, located in the spines of the first dorsal fin and the gill covers, is thermolabile, meaning it can be neutralized by heat; immersing a sting in hot water is a common first-aid measure to alleviate pain.
Feeding
As an opportunistic carnivore, its diet consists mainly of small bottom-dwelling creatures, including crustaceans like mysids, amphipods, and isopods. It may also consume small fish larvae and occasionally small molluscs.
