Squat Anemone Shrimp

Overview

The Squat Anemone Shrimp, widely known as the "Sexy Shrimp," is a small, charismatic crustacean recognized for its unique habit of holding its abdomen upright and rhythmically swaying it. These social shrimp are frequently found in small groups living in symbiotic association with sea anemones, corals, and other marine invertebrates in tropical reef environments.

Appearance

Typically measuring between 1 and 3 cm, these shrimp possess a translucent body that ranges in color from olive-brown to orange. Their most striking features are the symmetrically arranged, iridescent white or yellowish spots across their body, which are bordered by thin, dark brown or electric blue lines. They have thin, elongated antennae and legs, and they are easily identified by their characteristic posture, where the tail fan is held curved upward above the head.

Biology & behavior

These shrimp are known for their active, dance-like movements, which are believed to serve as communication or signaling to others. They are protandric hermaphrodites, meaning individuals typically mature as males first and may later transition into females. While they are not strictly territorial, they are often observed in small, non-hierarchical groups on a single host. When threatened, they can move with surprising speed to retreat into the safety of their host's stinging tentacles.

Feeding

As opportunistic omnivores, they feed on a variety of sources, including planktonic particles trapped in the host's mucus, host tissue, and small detritus. They may also act as cleaners by consuming parasites found on the bodies of larger marine animals.
