About
Overview
The Stocky Anthias (Pseudanthias hypselosoma) is a vibrant, reef-associated fish widely distributed across the Indo-Pacific. Typically found in small groups, these fish are known for their social structure and striking color displays, particularly among males.
Distribution & Habitat
This species inhabits tropical marine environments, ranging from the Maldives to Samoa and extending north to Taiwan and the Ryukyu Islands, and south to the Great Barrier Reef. They are commonly found in well-protected areas such as lagoons, bays, and reef slopes, often hovering near rocky or coral-rich substrates.
Appearance
While generally characterized by a plain pinkish body, the Stocky Anthias exhibits notable sexual dimorphism. Males are distinguished by their more intense coloration and elevated soft dorsal and anal fins. Females typically feature a bright purple ring around the eye and a distinct red margin on the tail fin.
Biology & Behavior
These fish are protogynous hermaphrodites, meaning individuals are born female and can transition into males. They are highly social and live in haremic groups, usually consisting of one dominant male and several females. They are active swimmers that rely on constant movement and are known to be territorial toward other fish with similar behaviors.
