Overview

The Organ Pipe Coral (Tubipora musica) is a unique soft coral that produces a rigid, bright red skeleton composed of parallel, calcium carbonate tubes. Despite its stony appearance, it is classified as an octocoral, characterized by polyps that possess eight feather-like tentacles.

Distribution & habitat

This species is widely distributed across the tropical Indo-Pacific, ranging from the Red Sea to the islands of the South Pacific. It typically inhabits shallow, sheltered reef environments, including reef flats and slopes, where it thrives in areas with moderate light and water movement.

Appearance

The colony structure resembles the pipes of a musical organ, formed by vertical tubes connected by horizontal platforms. While the skeleton itself is a striking, vibrant red, it is often obscured in living colonies by the polyps. These polyps are typically white, green, or bluish-grey, giving the coral a flower-like appearance when they are fully extended.

Biology & behavior

Tubipora musica is a colonial organism that lives in symbiosis with microscopic algae called zooxanthellae. These algae provide the coral with essential nutrients through photosynthesis. The polyps are highly sensitive and will retract quickly into their protective tubes if disturbed. Colonies can grow to significant sizes, sometimes reaching over a meter in diameter.

Feeding

While the coral derives much of its energy from its symbiotic algae, it also actively captures zooplankton from the water column using its tentacles. Supplemental feeding with fine particulate foods, such as phytoplankton or rotifers, can support growth and maintain vibrant coloration.

Reproduction

This species reproduces through both sexual and asexual means. Sexual reproduction involves the broadcast spawning of gametes into the water column, while asexual propagation occurs through budding, allowing the colony to expand across the substrate.
