About
Overview
The Lined Soapfish (Grammistes sexlineatus) is a distinctive marine fish widely distributed across the Indo-Pacific region. It is well-known for its unique defense mechanism, which involves secreting a toxic, bitter-tasting mucus from its skin when stressed, resembling lathered soap.
Distribution & habitat
This species is found throughout the tropical Indo-Pacific, ranging from the Red Sea and East Africa to southern Japan, Australia, and as far east as the Marquesas and Mangareva islands. It typically inhabits rocky and coral reef environments, often seeking shelter in caves, crevices, or under ledges. While commonly observed in shallower waters, it has been recorded at depths reaching 130 meters.
Appearance
Reaching up to 30 cm in length, the Lined Soapfish has a high, oval-shaped body that is laterally compressed. Its base coloration is dark brown, marked by horizontal white or yellow lines. The pattern changes significantly with age: juveniles start with white or yellow spots, which transition into three stripes at 5 cm and eventually six distinct lines once the fish exceeds 8 cm. In large adults, these lines may break into smaller dashes or spots.
Biology & behavior
Primarily nocturnal, this species remains hidden during the day and becomes active at night to hunt. Its skin contains glands that produce a powerful toxin called grammistin, which serves as a potent deterrent against predators. Due to this chemical defense, it is considered a hardy but potentially dangerous species in aquarium settings, as the toxin can be fatal to other tank inhabitants if the fish is stressed.
Feeding
As a carnivore, the Lined Soapfish is an opportunistic predator. It uses its large mouth and rows of sharp, hooked teeth to feed on a variety of prey, including small fish, crustaceans, and mollusks.
