About
Overview
Amphiroa rigida is a small, calcified red alga known for its rigid, brittle, and articulated structure. It typically forms loose, tangled tufts of branched filaments that are widely distributed across temperate and tropical marine waters globally.
Appearance
This species is characterized by a calcified thallus that reaches up to 5 cm in height. It features cylindrical, articulated segments—often called intergenicula—that measure approximately 2.5 to 4.5 mm in length and 0.4 to 0.6 mm in diameter. The branches are arranged in an irregular, often dichotomous pattern, frequently diverging at right angles. The color of the living alga ranges from deep violet to a lighter pink or nearly white, particularly in well-lit environments.
Distribution & habitat
Amphiroa rigida is a cosmopolitan species found in the Mediterranean Sea, the Atlantic Ocean, the Indian Ocean, and the Pacific Ocean. It is a photophilic species, meaning it thrives in well-lit areas, and is commonly found in the sublittoral zone. It typically grows on rocky substrates in sheltered or calm waters, though it can occasionally be found in tide pools in more exposed locations.
