About

Overview

Sargassum vulgare is a species of brown macroalgae characterized by its ability to thrive in well-lit, turbulent marine environments. Unlike its holopelagic relatives that drift freely in the open ocean, this species is typically found attached to rocky substrates in coastal waters.

Distribution & habitat

This seaweed is commonly found in tropical and subtropical regions. It is a benthic organism, meaning it grows attached to rocks, coral reefs, and stones within the sublittoral zone. It is known to inhabit areas with strong luminosity and can be found in both protected and exposed coastal waters, ranging from the high tide line down to depths of approximately 30 to 40 meters.

Appearance

Sargassum vulgare typically grows up to 40 centimeters in length. Like other members of its genus, it features gas-filled bladders that provide buoyancy, allowing the thallus to float upright in the water column. Its structure is adapted to withstand the physical stresses of the wave-exposed environments it inhabits.
