About
Overview
The Banded Brittle Star (Ophiolepis superba) is a striking marine echinoderm recognized by its distinct, harlequin-like color patterns. It is a solitary, benthic species commonly found in tropical reef environments across the Indo-Pacific and Red Sea regions.
Distribution & habitat
This species is widely distributed throughout the Indo-Pacific, including the Red Sea, Indian Ocean, and the tropical Pacific up to Hawaii and southern Japan. It typically inhabits protected reef areas, where it resides from the surface down to depths of approximately 50 meters. During the day, it is primarily found hidden beneath coral rubble, rocks, or stones to avoid predators.
Appearance
Ophiolepis superba features a pentagonal central disc that can reach up to 3 cm in diameter, with five relatively short, robust arms measuring 10 to 12 cm. Its base coloration is typically beige to pale yellow-orange, adorned with a variable, dark purple or black star-like pattern on the disc. The arms are characterized by prominent, alternating dark bands. The disc surface is covered in thick, visible plates, and the arms appear relatively smooth due to the presence of small, lateral spines.
Biology & behavior
This brittle star is primarily nocturnal, remaining sheltered during daylight hours and emerging to forage when it detects food. It is generally solitary and not territorial. While it is a capable mover, it is not considered highly mobile compared to other species.
Feeding
As an omnivorous scavenger with a carnivorous tendency, this species plays a role as a natural cleaner in its environment. It feeds on detritus and organic matter found on the substrate, and it is also known to actively consume small pieces of animal tissue, such as mollusks or crustaceans, when available.
