Rhopalaea Crassa

Indian Ocean, Tropical Pacific
About
Overview
Rhopalaea crassa is a species of solitary tunicate belonging to the family Diazonidae. It is primarily found in tropical marine environments, where it is often observed attached to hard substrates such as coral reefs.
Appearance
This species is typically yellow or, less commonly, white in coloration. It is characterized by a relatively large, prominent thorax that can reach lengths of 5 to 8 centimeters. It is important to note that Rhopalaea crassa is frequently confused with other tunicates; for instance, cobalt blue specimens often misidentified as this species are actually Rhopalaea fusca, and other undescribed species featuring neon-colored patterns are also often incorrectly labeled as Rhopalaea crassa.
Distribution & habitat
Rhopalaea crassa is distributed across warm and temperate oceans. In the field, it is commonly encountered in subtidal zones, often nestled between corals or attached to various structures within marine fouling communities.
