About
Overview
Batzella inops is a species of marine sponge typically found in the Atlantic and Mediterranean regions. It is known for its soft, encrusting growth form and vibrant coloration, which is most commonly a vivid red, though yellow variations can occur.
Distribution & habitat
This sponge is frequently observed on rocky infralittoral substrates, including walls, boulders, and mollusk shells. It shows a notable preference for sheltered environments such as submerged caves, where it is often more abundant than on exposed surfaces, though it remains capable of surviving in more open conditions.
Appearance
Batzella inops typically forms soft, encrusting mats or thin layers that may develop small lobes reaching 1–2 cm in height. The surface is generally irregular and soft to the touch. A key identifying feature is the presence of visible, approximately 1 cm wide openings (oscules) connected by distinct, noticeable subdermal canals that run across the sponge's surface.
