Holothuria Arguinensis
Sandy & muddy bottom, Seagrass meadow
Mediterranean Sea, Temperate Atlantic
About
Overview
Holothuria arguinensis is a species of sea cucumber found in the northeastern Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. It is a benthic organism that plays a vital role in marine ecosystems by enhancing nutrient cycling through its deposit-feeding and bioturbation activities.
Distribution & habitat
This species is primarily distributed from Portugal to Morocco and Mauritania, including the Canary Islands. It has recently expanded its range into the Mediterranean Sea, particularly along the coast of Spain. It typically inhabits shallow coastal waters, favoring sandy bottoms and seagrass meadows, often in the lower intertidal zone.
Appearance
This sea cucumber possesses a rigid, somewhat cylindrical body. Mature individuals can reach lengths of approximately 35 cm and weigh around 270 grams. Its morphology is similar to other related species, which can sometimes lead to identification challenges in the field.
Biology & behavior
H. arguinensis is generally a solitary, slow-moving animal. It is sensitive to environmental stressors such as low water temperature and salinity, which can trigger a period of reduced activity or hibernation. Interestingly, the species has been observed providing shelter for juvenile fish, such as the Senegal sea bream, which hide beneath its body for protection.
Feeding
As a deposit feeder, it processes sediment to extract organic matter, contributing significantly to the productivity of oligotrophic carbonate sediments.
Reproduction
Spawning typically occurs from summer to autumn, with activity peaking between April and July. Reproductive success is closely linked to environmental cues, including longer photoperiods, warmer water temperatures, and the availability of phytoplankton biomass.
