Overview

The African striped grunt (Parapristipoma octolineatum) is a marine fish belonging to the grunt family, Haemulidae. It is primarily found in the eastern Atlantic Ocean, ranging from Spain and Portugal down to Angola, with occasional sightings in the Mediterranean Sea.

Appearance

This species features an elongated, fusiform body with a large, oblique mouth, a short snout, and a prominent chin. While it may appear dark or black underwater, its true coloration consists of a brownish upper body and a silvery lower body. A defining characteristic is the presence of four distinct white, horizontal stripes along each flank, with two of these lines passing directly through the eyes. Its fins are yellow, with the caudal fin typically displaying the most vivid coloration.

Distribution & habitat

The African striped grunt inhabits shallow coastal waters, typically ranging from the shoreline down to depths of approximately 50 meters. It is commonly associated with sand or rocky substrates.

Feeding

This species is a predator that feeds primarily on a diet of crustaceans and mollusks.
