About

Overview

Jania rubens, commonly known as the slender-beaded coral weed, is a species of calcified red seaweed found in European waters and the Mediterranean. It is a photophilic species that typically thrives in calm, shallow marine environments.

Appearance

This seaweed features slender, rose-pink, and articulated fronds that grow in rounded bunches, reaching up to 50 mm in height. Its structure is heavily calcified and characterized by repeated dichotomous branching, though more robust specimens may exhibit a pinnate appearance. The fronds are composed of cylindrical segments, with those supporting branches often appearing slightly compressed.

Distribution & habitat

Jania rubens is widely distributed across the Mediterranean, the Azores, Portugal, and the Atlantic coast of Spain, as well as the British Isles. It is primarily an epiphytic species, commonly found growing on older brown algae such as Cladostephus spongiosus and various species of Cystoseira and Ericaria. It typically inhabits the lower intertidal to upper sublittoral zones, often in areas with calm water, and can spread vegetatively by developing attachment discs where its branches contact solid surfaces.
