About
Overview
Thread Weed (Ulva compressa) is a widespread green seaweed characterized by its tubular, often branched, and flattened fronds. It is highly adaptable, thriving in diverse marine and brackish environments ranging from sheltered coastal sites to exposed rocky shores.
Appearance
This species typically forms dense, gregarious clusters of vibrant green, hollow, and tubular fronds. The thallus is morphologically plastic, meaning its shape can vary significantly; it may appear as slender, branched tubes or, in some conditions, as flattened, blade-like structures. The fronds are often attached to substrates by a small, contracted stalk, and during photosynthesis, small oxygen bubbles may become trapped within the hollow tubes.
Distribution & habitat
Thread Weed has a cosmopolitan distribution, found across the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, as well as in the Mediterranean Sea. It is particularly common in the intertidal zone, where it colonizes rock pools, sandy substrates, and coastal structures. It is exceptionally tolerant of fluctuating temperatures and varying salinity levels, allowing it to flourish in estuaries and areas with significant freshwater influence.
Biology & behavior
Known for its rapid growth, this seaweed can occasionally form massive accumulations, sometimes referred to as "green tides." While these blooms can provide habitat, excessive growth may lead to localized oxygen depletion, which can negatively impact other marine life. The species is highly resilient and has been studied for its ability to withstand environmental stressors, including heavy metal contamination.
