About

Overview

The Tricolored Felimare (Felimare tricolor) is a vibrant nudibranch belonging to the family Chromodorididae. It is primarily found in the Western Mediterranean Sea and parts of the Eastern Atlantic Ocean, where it inhabits rocky substrates and sublittoral zones.

Appearance

This species is characterized by a smooth, elongated body that is typically blue to violet in color. It features a distinctive yellow or white midline running along the dorsum, often accompanied by a yellow-orange border around the mantle. The body is further adorned with longitudinal white or yellowish lines along the flanks. Its rhinophores and gills are generally blue, though individual color intensity and patterns can vary significantly between specimens, which sometimes makes identification challenging compared to similar blue Felimare species.

Feeding

Felimare tricolor is a specialized feeder that grazes on various sponges. It is frequently observed on sponges from the genus Dysidea, as well as Scalarispongia scalaris. These nudibranchs are often found in close association with their food sources on rocky, shaded surfaces.

Reproduction

As a hermaphroditic species, Felimare tricolor reproduces by laying eggs in narrow, gelatinous bands. These egg ribbons are typically white and arranged in a spiral pattern, often consisting of about two and a half turns, which are then attached to the substrate.
